6 Professions That Will Be The First To Die, Replaced By Robots, Is Your Job There?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Since becoming popular in recent years, opinions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been divided into several views. One of them believes that technology will replace several human jobs.

The McKinsey Global Institute predicts that several professions will be replaced first. According to the report, tens of millions of Americans (US) will face what is called a job transition in 2030. This happens when jobs change significantly or are lost due to AI.

In addition, automation is estimated to replace human tasks by up to 30% of working hours in the US economy.

Wealthup reports job projections that may be disrupted by AI. Here are the 6 jobs, summarized Friday (11/10/2024):

1. Clerk (Receptionist, Filing, Payroll, Inventory Records, etc.)

  • In the future, this job will experience a decrease in demand. Because this job is considered repetitive and can be replaced by the system.
  • McKinsey said the decline reached 1.6 million in 2030. In more detail, financial clerks are expected to decline by more than 14%, archiving and payroll clerks and timekeeping by 16% and information clerks by more than 18% by 2032.

2. Physical Storekeepers

  • These workers are found in physical stores. Usually help find and explain products and process payments.
  • This job will be a memory in the future. McKinsey estimates that 830 thousand jobs will be lost in the US by 2030, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states a decline of 2.2% or around 80 thousand by 2032.

3. Administrative Assistants

  • Administrative Assistants work to schedule appointments, organize correspondence, and create spreadsheets. This job can be found in various industries.
  • By 2030, McKinsey reports that this position will decrease by 710 thousand. Meanwhile, the BLS predicts a decline of up to half a dozen categories, with the legal sector the largest, with a forecast of 22% by 2032.

4. Cashier

  • Technology advances are known to have a major impact on cashier jobs. The McKinsey report said 630,000 jobs will be lost by 2030, and the BLS projects 348,100 by 2032.
  • However, the downward trend may be changing. Because retail giants like Walmart and Dollar General have eliminated self-checkout machines at certain stores due to increased theft and technology issues.

5. Factory Worker

  • This job involves manual tasks on an assembly line. Usually found in production or manufacturing facilities.
  • However, this job is very vulnerable to AI technology. McKinsey said 36% of working hours could be affected by automation in manufacturing.
  • The BLS also predicts a decline in jobs. In 10 years, 2022-2032, the decline reached 9.3%.

6. Food Service

  • This industry includes restaurants, catering, cafeterias, and vending companies. Unfortunately, it also has the highest potential for automation, says McKinsey.
  • The BLS estimates the industry will decline by about 4.8% by 2032. This is because food service is a predictable, physical job.
