Reasons why Germany bans Lenovo and Motorola cellphones from being sold

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A German district court has ordered a ban on the sale of Lenovo and Motorola devices in the country.

Motorola, a subsidiary of Chinese technology giant Lenovo, is prohibited from selling all types of cellphones with a WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) module that supports mobile internet access via cellular networks. That means all Moto phones, including the latest Edge 50 range, will not be available in Germany.

Motorola’s German website has also removed all traces of sales of the phone, and currently only sells a few accessories.

Meanwhile, Lenovo’s German website states that mobile configurations of some of its laptops will only be available until supplies run out.

The ban on sales of Lenovo and Motorola in Germany came after Lenovo was found guilty of violating patents developed by American technology company InterDigital.

In early May, InterDigital obtained a court order against Lenovo in Germany, and on May 8, a Munich court temporarily imposed a sales ban on Lenovo.

In response, Lenovo will appeal the court’s decision, stating that InterDigital’s requirements are unfair, as quoted by CNBC Indonesia from Android Authority, Friday (17/5/2024).
