X Must Pay Additional Fine To Resume Services In Brazil
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, can resume its services in Brazil if it agrees to pay an additional fine.
Reuters and other publications reported an order from Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes that the Elon Musk-owned social platform can “immediately resume operations” if it pays a fine of about $1.9 million.
The fine is in addition to the $3.4 million fine already imposed on X.
For much of this year, X has been embroiled in a legal battle over Moraes’ attempts to block certain accounts accused of spreading election-related misinformation.
X ultimately ceased operations in Brazil and was banned from operating in the country in late August.
The ban caused a surge in popularity for rival services, including Bluesky.
Recently, X appeared to reverse course, agreeing to block the designated accounts, pay the required fine, and appoint legal representation in Brazil.
The Global Government Affairs X account said in a post on Thursday, “We recognize and respect the sovereignty of the countries in which we operate” and claimed that providing access to users in Brazil “is essential to a thriving democracy.”
