Banks Urged to Brace for Major Disaster; Casualties Already High

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) technology has already brought about serious threats. Recently, US-based companies OpenAI and Anthropic—providers of cutting-edge “frontier” AI models—reported alarming incidents.

Their AI models reportedly broke out of testing environments and covertly breached several companies, beyond human control. This illustrates the potential danger posed by AI when its sophistication is not matched by robust cybersecurity defenses.

Previously, several nations had warned banking institutions to bolster their defense systems following Anthropic’s introduction of the highly advanced “Mythos” AI model. Recent incidents have once again raised alarm bells for government agencies, banks, and corporations.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is taking aggressive action amidst the massive adoption of AI. He has urged top US corporate leaders to immediately join a dedicated industry alliance to fortify critical infrastructure against AI-related risks, according to a Reuters report on Thursday (August 6, 2026).

Two sources familiar with the plan revealed that Dimon has personally contacted executives ranging from major banks and key regional banks to leading technology corporations.

He is personally spearheading the expansion of the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure (ACI), a cross-sector group that JPMorgan helped establish in the past.

Engaging 40 Cross-Sector Companies

Since last July, this outreach initiative has targeted more than 40 strategic companies. The sectors involved range from financial services, energy, and clean water providers to utilities, telecommunications, airlines, and railway networks. All these vital industries now rely heavily on sophisticated technology.

As the head of the largest bank in the US, Dimon’s views on the economy, regulation, and technology serve as a key reference point for the market. He is consistently among the few top-tier CEOs who have openly sounded the alarm regarding the use of advanced AI systems without strict controls.

Risk Mitigation and Synergy with the Government

This revamped ACI initiative carries a crucial mission: building a comprehensive understanding of AI utilization, identifying hidden threats, and formulating necessary security standards. The group is also expected to serve as a strategic partner to President Donald Trump’s administration in shaping relevant policies.

The need for this alliance has become increasingly urgent following a series of recent cyberattacks targeting water management systems in Minnesota and other parts of the U.S. These incidents demonstrate that real-time information sharing across industries has become an absolute necessity.

JPMorgan is a founding member of the ACI, alongside financial and energy giants such as Mastercard and Berkshire Hathaway Energy. The organization was established to devise cross-sector resilience strategies and mitigate risks ranging from physical and geopolitical issues to cyber threats.

When asked for his thoughts during an exclusive interview with CNBC International, Dimon downplayed his role in the initiative. He noted that ACI Executive Chairman Tom Fanning had laid the groundwork for the group years ago.

“I’m like a supporting actor,” Dimon said. “The group will help serve as a bridge to the government—both for providing input and receiving direction,” he explained.

As of this writing, the White House has not issued an official comment. However, ACI emphasizes that amidst increasingly complex cyber threats, protecting public facilities and critical infrastructure cannot be achieved in isolation; it requires close collaboration between the state and the corporate sector.

The Looming Threat of Advanced AI Models

Global concern regarding the rapid pace of AI development has surged alongside the ambitions of corporations racing to integrate the technology.

Regulators and experts have repeatedly warned that AI is a double-edged sword. While it boosts efficiency, it also creates new vulnerabilities and facilitates massive-scale cyberattacks.

Previously, Dimon issued a stern warning regarding the potential dangers posed by Anthropic’s “Mythos” AI model. He emphasized the need for strict controls over access to advanced AI capabilities.

“You are handing ballistic missiles to individuals with Mythos,” Dimon warned last July.

At the national level, the US federal government has also stepped up coordination by launching the Gold Eagle initiative in July. This program brings together AI developers, critical infrastructure operators, and federal agencies to map out vulnerabilities identified by advanced AI models and coordinate remediation efforts.

Through consolidation under the ACI—which is slated to be fully operational by the end of this year—US corporations hope to avoid being caught off guard amidst the relentless pace of the digital revolution.
