6 Ways to Install Ubuntu Linux for Beginners: Complete and Easy
1. Initial Preparation Before Installing Linux
Before starting the installation, make sure your device meets the following basic requirements:
Processor: Dual-core 2 GHz
A processor with two or more cores will help Ubuntu run smoothly. It doesn’t have to be the most sophisticated, as long as it’s fast enough to meet daily needs such as browsing and editing documents.
RAM: Minimum 4 GB
Although Ubuntu can run with 2 GB of RAM, we recommend that you use a device with 4 GB of RAM. This makes the Linux system run more responsively and can run applications multitasking without any obstacles.
Storage Space: Minimum 25 GB
Ubuntu requires a large enough space for the operating system and updates. Therefore, prepare at least 25 GB of free space on your hard drive or SSD to facilitate the installation process.
Installation Media: USB Flash Drive Minimum 4 GB
You will need a USB flash drive to create Ubuntu installation media. Make sure the capacity is at least 4 GB and there are no important files on it because this process will erase all data on the flash drive.
Internet Connection (optional)
You must prepare a stable internet connection if you want to download updates during the installation process. However, this step is optional and you can still do the installation yourself.
2. Download the Ubuntu ISO File
The next step is to download the Ubuntu operating system from its official source. Make sure you get the latest stable version of the application.
Visit the official Ubuntu website
Open the following link ubuntu.com/download/desktop. Here, you will find various versions of Ubuntu available for download.
Select the Ubuntu version
We recommend that you choose the LTS (Long Term Support) version such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. With this, your system will be given long-term updates and is more stable.
Click the Download button
After selecting the desired version, click the “Download” button to download the Ubuntu ISO file. The installation duration will adjust to your internet speed.
3. Create a Bootable USB
After getting the ISO file, you need to create a bootable USB to run Ubuntu from a flash drive. There are two popular ways that you can use, namely using Rufus or balenaEtcher.
Using Rufus (Windows)
Download and install Rufus: Visit the official Rufus website and download the latest version. After that, install the application on your computer.
Connect USB Flash Drive to Computer: Make sure your USB is connected and recognized by the system.
Open Rufus and Select USB Drive: Run Rufus, then select the USB flash drive to be used in the “Device” section.
Click SELECT and Select Ubuntu ISO File: Press the SELECT button and locate the Ubuntu ISO file that you downloaded earlier.
Click START and Wait for the Process to Complete: Click the START button to start the bootable USB creation process. Wait a few moments for it to finish, usually only a few minutes.
Using balenaEtcher (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Download and Install balenaEtcher: Visit balena.io/etcher and download the application according to the operating system you are using.
Open balenaEtcher: Once successfully installed, open the application.
Click Flash from file and select the Ubuntu ISO file: Select the Ubuntu ISO file that you downloaded earlier.
Click Select target and Select Your USB Drive: Select the USB flash drive used as the bootable media.
Click Flash to Start the Process: Press the “Flash” button and wait for the process to complete. If so, your flash drive is ready to be used for installation.
4. Boot from USB
After creating a bootable USB, you will set the device used. This process will direct the system to read the installation files from the USB.
Insert USB into Computer Port: Plug the USB into an available port on your laptop or PC.
Restart the Computer and Enter the Boot Menu: After restarting, immediately press the boot menu key (usually F12, Esc, or Del) depending on the brand of your device. With this, you can choose which device to use to boot.
Select USB as Primary Boot Device: In the boot menu, select your flash drive as the primary media.
The Computer Will Display the Ubuntu Installation Menu: If successful, the Ubuntu installation home screen will appear. This is a sign to continue the installation process!
5. Installing Ubuntu
This stage is the actual installation of Ubuntu. Here, you will determine basic preferences and settings according to your needs.
Select Language and Click Install Ubuntu
When the system displays a welcome message, select your preferred language. After that, click the “Install Ubuntu” option to start the installation process.
Select Keyboard Layout and Installation Type
Select the appropriate keyboard settings, then continue. There are two types of installations available, namely normal installation and minimal installation.
Normal installation: Includes common applications such as browsers and media players.
Minimal installation: Contains only basic applications.
Select Additional Options
To ensure that Ubuntu is always up to date, check the “Download updates while installing Ubuntu” option. You can also check “Install third-party software” to get drivers and multimedia codecs.
Select Partition Method
At the partition stage, select the appropriate method, between erase disk and install Ubuntu or something else.
Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu: This option will erase all data and continue installing Ubuntu.
Something Else: This method is suitable if you want to set the partition manually.
Click Install Now and Confirm
After determining the partition method, click “Install Now” to start the process of allocating space on the disk. When a confirmation message appears about changing the partition, read it carefully and click confirm.
This action will ensure that all previous data is erased (if you choose erase disk) and Ubuntu is ready to be installed.
Select Time Zone and Enter User Information
Select your city or time zone, then click Continue. Make sure the time settings are correct for an optimal user experience.
After that, fill in the form with the username, computer name, and password that will be used to log in to Ubuntu. After all the data is filled in correctly, click “Continue” to complete the account setup.
Wait for the Process to Complete
The installation will run for a few minutes. After the installation process is complete, you will be asked to click “Restart Now”. Don’t forget to remove the USB drive when prompted so that the system can boot from the internal hard drive.
6. Complete the Installation
The last step, make sure your system is ready to use. Use the password you created earlier to log in to the system. Wait a few seconds until you enter the main Ubuntu desktop display.
Open “Software Updater” to check if there are any updates available. Use the Ubuntu Software Center to find and install the applications you need such as additional browsers, productivity tools, or graphical applications.
