AI Hype, Telkom Ready to Build Giant Data Center with 500 MW Capacity

Bali, CNBC Indonesia – PT Telkom Indonesia (TLKM) has the ambition to build a data center with a total capacity of 400-500 megawatts (MW) by 2030.

Telkom Group Business Director Honesti Basyir said that the determination of the target is also in line with the massive development of artificial intelligence in Indonesia.

We have a plan for Telkom Group to build 400-500 MW by 2030,” said Honesti at the Bali Annual Telkom International Conference press conference, Tuesday (8/27/2024).

Honesti said that to achieve this goal, Telkom could build its own data center, or collaborate or form a consortium with other companies. In addition, Telkom also does not rule out the possibility of expanding to other countries.

It is known that Telkom is currently increasing the capacity of the hyperscale data center campus 1 located in Cikarang, West Java by 18 MW. In addition, Telkom is also building a 50MW hyperscale data center in Batam, Riau Islands. According to Honesti, this project is predicted to be completed in semester 1/2025.

However, Honesti admitted that Indonesia currently has quite tight competitors, because several Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines are also involved in this industry.

However, Honesti is optimistic that this will not be an obstacle.

On the contrary, according to Honesti, Telkom through its subsidiary PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin) can carry out several partnerships with several global players and investors to capture these opportunities.

They (Telin) are doing a lot of partnerships with global players, with hyperscale and also global AI,” said Honesti.
