AI Replacing Humans Threatens Indonesian Workers, Here’s What the Software Giant Says

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Since the massive development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) some time ago, many concerns have emerged. One of them is about the potential for technology to replace humans. Many studies also explain the potential for many jobs to be taken over by AI systems. Starting from jobs in the technology industry, online drivers, media, to teachers. However, President Director of IBM Indonesia, Roy Kosasih explained that humans will not be replaced by AI. He said that what will happen is that those who use AI will replace people who do not adapt to the technology.

“AI, especially generative AI, will not replace humans. But humans who use AI will be able to replace humans who do not use AI,” said Roy in IBM Impact for Adult Learners, Academia, and Women in Workforce, Monday (26/8/2024).

He explained that AI has become a necessity. Even many company CEOs say that companies must use AI, if they do not want to be left behind by other companies. Its application also continues to grow in various industries. What needs to be done now is to find new use cases to implement.

So every time you can implement or build a new use case in a company, it will then see the company will be able to see, oh it turns out that the use of AI is very helpful. To provide much greater effectiveness, efficiency, or productivity,” he said.

He explained that companies will develop more with AI. One example is making work more efficient or even creating new jobs.

“So the key word is, by using AI, a company will develop, become extraordinary,” he explained.

Digital Talent Still Lacking

Therefore, Indonesia needs a lot of talent to develop and implement AI further. Quoting a survey, the need for talent in the technology sector itself reaches 9 million workers.

“Well, from these 9 million, how do we target it, it may not be immediately, or the need for AI alone is 9 million,” explained Roy.

However, the number of talent needs can increase. Namely, it depends on the government and private sectors building the absorption of AI technology in each sector.

But depending on the government and private sectors building the absorption of AI technology will increase the need,” said Roy.

Although Indonesia is also considered ready to implement in the field of technology. It is even said to be very fast in adopting it.

However, Roy also reminded of the need to improve certain things. For example, doubts about the talents they have to adopt technology.

There are some doubts from CEOs or company leaders in Indonesia. When I chatted with them, when I started introducing AI, there were a few questions from them like this, do I have the talent in my position to adopt the use of AI? So there are a few doubts,” said Roy.

AI Regulations in Indonesia, Are They Necessary?

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government has also issued a Circular regarding AI ethics. Circular of the Minister of Communication and Information Number 9 of 2023 on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics which was released last year.

This was made for business actors, AI-based programming activities, and the implementation of public and private electronic systems. Circular is expected to be a guideline for ethics when using AI.

Not only that, the government is also preparing additional regulations regarding AI. The form is estimated to be a ministerial regulation or presidential regulation, it could also be in the form of a law.

“Of course we want more complex and more powerful regulations in the form of laws later, but before going there, we need to exercise several vertical and horizontal regulations related to AI adoption,” said Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria recently.

Regarding this regulation, Roy explained that regulations on AI ethics are indeed needed. He said that Indonesia is one of those that responds quickly to technological developments.

“Indeed, ethical AI regulations are very much needed. We see that the Indonesian government is very good, very quick to respond to the development of AI so quickly and so powerfully,” said Roy.

Legislation on AI will also make people no longer hesitate to use AI. Including using technology more ethically and responsibly.

Because it will regulate various sectors of how AI is adopted, developed, so that we can make this society no longer hesitate to use AI,” he explained.

“We know that the AI implemented in Indonesia, if in accordance with these regulations, will be ethical and responsible AI,” he added.
