Apple Bans Employees From
Playing Social Media
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Apple is accused of banning its employees from playing social media. This latest accusation follows the issue of dismissing an employee for a similar reason in 2021.
The complaint was filed with the United States (US) National Labor Relations Board. The allegations relate to restrictions, monitoring and interference with workers’ rights by Apple.
Apple is said to have prohibited workers from creating new Slack channels. According to the company, all complaints can be submitted directly to managers or the People Support channel.
Apple also denied the allegations. The iPhone manufacturer’s promise is to maintain a positive and inclusive workplace culture, quoted from Apple Insider, Thursday (10/17/2024).
Previously in October, Apple was also reported for forcing employees to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Long before the two reports, Apple was said to have fired an employee named Janneke Parrish. The dismissal occurred due to employee and union activities, including the use of Slack and other social media.
According to Parrish at that time, Apple discriminated against gender and race. In addition, she accused her of being targeted for demanding remote work when Covid-19 became something permanent.
Parrish also advocated for permission to distribute the equal pay survey. Apple has denied all allegations, and claims to have respected employee rights.
Parrish’s attorney, Laurie Burges explained that she wants Apple to be held accountable. Because the Cupertino-based company has implemented rules that are against the law.
“We hope to hold Apple accountable in court for creating rules that are against the law. And for terminating employees for engaging in protected activities, namely speaking out about gender discrimination and civil rights violations in the workplace,” she explained.
