Apple cellphones are expensive,

this is how Indonesian citizens

buy cheap iPhones

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesian cellphone sales show that the premium smartphone market priced at US$ 600 (Rp. 9.5 million) and above grew significantly by 12.8% in Q1 2024 year-on-year (yoy).

In an IDC report specifically for the Indonesian market, it was noted that this growth was led by the iPhone series produced by Apple.

In fact, if you look at the global market, iPhone sales have recently been reported to have declined in several countries. According to an IDC report, global iPhone sales in the world fell 9.6% year-on-year (yoy) in Q1 2024.

This cannot be separated from the drop in sales in China, which is the largest cellphone market in the world. Based on data from research firm Counterpoint, iPhone sales in China will fall 19% yoy in Q1 2024.

IDC Indonesia Associate Market Analyst, Vanessa Aurelia, said that premium cellphones with prices above US$ 1,600 (Rp. 25.5 million) are increasingly popular with Indonesian citizens.

It is known that several cellphone lines that are set at a price range of IDR 25 million are the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra series, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apart from that, premium cellphones with a price range of US$ 800-1,000 (Rp. 12.7-15.9 million) also grew the most.

Vanessa said that several years ago when the iPhone 11 was introduced, Apple began to penetrate premium cellphones at more affordable prices.

“Recently, Apple also increased the portion of the iPhone 13 in Indonesia starting in the second half of last year. This strategy was effective by offering discounts for this model,” said Vanessa in an official statement received by CNBC Indonesia, quoted Wednesday (22/5/2024) .

“Both models enhance Apple’s portfolio for the non-premium segment,” he added.

IDC noted that in the mid-range cellphone segment with prices ranging from US$ 200-600 (Rp. 3.2-9.5 million), Apple also contributed the most along with Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi. This mid-range segment recorded the largest growth of 73.4%.

In total, in Q1 2024, cellphone shipment growth rose 27.4% yoy. Apple is not yet in the ‘Top 5’ ranks, because Apple does not have a portfolio in the budget segment which is still popular with Indonesian citizens with growth of 17.6% yoy.

The ‘Top 5’ ranks in Indonesia are sequentially occupied by Oppo (19.9%), Samsung (17.3%), Transsion (16.1%), Vivo (15.8%), and Xiaomi (15.6%).
