Beware of Fake QR Code Scams,

Instantly Draining Your Account

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia We often make payment transactions using QR codes. This method is much more practical because we can make transactions with just a capable mobile phone.

However, we need to remain vigilant when conducting transactions. There’s a fraud method called Quishing, a combination of QR codes and phishing, which can drain the victim’s account.

The perpetrators will trick the victim into scanning a QR code. From there, they will collect the victim’s personal information and details.

When the victim scans the QR code, they will be taken to a specific website. It can also display a simple message, a list of applications, or a map address.

Meanwhile, Wired reports that Quishing perpetrators will trick their victims into downloading something onto their devices. However, this download will compromise the victim’s device.

The victim will then be asked to enter login credentials, which the perpetrators will then collect.

Unfortunately, this crime is widespread. QR codes can be created easily and by anyone, without requiring any special skills.

You can avoid this crime in several ways. For example, don’t immediately trust QR codes posted in public places or given to you by strangers.

You can also identify QR codes intended for fraudulent purposes. Be wary of someone rushing to make a request, as scammers will increase their victim’s sense of urgency and anxiety to get what they want.

Finally, don’t forget to activate two-factor authentication on every service account you have. Also, log out of services immediately on devices you no longer use.
