ChatGPT Founder Suddenly
Resigns, What’s Up?
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The leadership crisis at OpenAI has occurred again. Several months ago the technology industry was shocked because the founder of OpenAI, Sam Altman, was fired by the board of directors.
After long discussions, Altman finally returned to the company. Now, it is the turn of co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who is known to have helped overthrow Altman, to leave.
“I am excited to face the next adventure, namely carrying out a project that is very meaningful to me personally,” he said in a post on his personal X account, quoted from CNBC International, Thursday (16/5/2024).
“I will share the details in the near future,” he said.
Last November, Altman’s dismissal was triggered by distrust of the board of directors. They said Altman was not transparent in his communications.
In this case, Sutskever became one of the most vocal against Altman. He and several of his colleagues adhere to the principle that AI should not endanger human fate.
Meanwhile, Altman is more focused on boosting OpenAI’s business growth by launching new technological innovations.
At that time, almost all OpenAI employees signed an open letter opposing the board of directors’ decision to fire Altman. A few days later, Altman finally returned to OpenAI.
At the same time, the top officials who decided on Altman’s dismissal were kicked from their directors’ chairs. These include Helen Toner, TashaMcCauley, and Sutskever.
However, Sutskever continues to work at OpenAI. He is an important figure who heads intelligence technology in the development of the popular AI chatbot service, ChatGPT.
“I am very impressed with Ilya. I hope we can continue to work together forever in our careers,” said Altman when asked about Sutskever’s status at that time.
After the announcement of Sutskever’s resignation, Altman admitted that he was very sad. He considered Sutskever to be a figure who had extraordinary thoughts.
“Ilya is one of the extraordinary minds of our generation. He is a light in the technology industry, and a good friend,” said Altman on his personal X account.
Furthermore, Altman said that OpenAI Research Director Jakub Pachoki, who has had a career at the company since 2017, would replace Sutskever as Chief Scientist.
News about Sutskever’s resignation emerged after OpenAI launched its newest tool which was predicted to be Google’s ‘killer’, namely GPT-4o. This service is capable of analyzing multimedia in sound, text and visual formats, in real-time to provide a more sophisticated AI experience to users.
