China Soars, US on the Brink of Absolute Defeat
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –The United States (US) no longer dominates the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector. The country began to lose due to the emergence of AI companies from China.
The popularity of AI began with ChatGPT through OpenAI from the US several years ago. Then a number of companies from that country, such as Google, Meta to xAI joined the AI race.
The AI Index report from the Institute for Human Centered AI (HAI) at Stanford University shows that Open AI and Google are still competing fiercely to build AI.
However, the most striking thing is the presence of DeepSeek’s latest model from China, R1. The model rocked the world earlier this year and sent a bad signal to the stock market and US technology companies.
In the report, R1 is ranked closest to the best performing models of the two companies.
“Chinese models are catching up in performance with US models. But around the world, a number of new players are emerging in the space,” explained research director at HAI, Vanessa Parli, quoted from Wired, Tuesday (8/4/2025).
Reports say that China’s AI is indeed on the rise. In fact, its score is the same as that produced by US companies.
China is reported to have published more papers and patents on AI than the US. However, the US still produces more AI models, namely 40 compared to 15 models from China.
In addition to the US and China, the rise of AI has also begun to be heard in other regions. For example, Europe is reported to have produced three AI models. AI models have also appeared in the Middle East, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
In addition, several AI models are reported to use open models or open weights that can be downloaded and modified for free. One of them is Meta with Llama, as well as DeepSeek and Mistral from France which adopted a similar model.
ChatGPT also announced that it will use an open source model in the middle of this year. This shows that the gap between open and closed models among AI companies is getting narrower.
Last year, the gap was reported to be only 1.7% compared to 8% from before. Although the majority of 60.7% still use closed sources
