China’s Fate in Trump’s Hands: Here’s the Outcome of Trade War Negotiations
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –The United States (US) and China met in Stockholm, Sweden, earlier this week to discuss the protracted trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
After two days of negotiations, the US and China reportedly agreed to extend the tariff truce, which was previously set for 90 days and was scheduled to expire on August 12, 2025.
Both sides said the negotiations were constructive, with the goal of de-escalating the trade war between the US and China. However, no details of the agreement have been announced.
US officials emphasized that a final agreement must be approved directly by US President Donald Trump, who will decide whether to continue the tariff war after the truce expires on August 12, 2025, or tariffs will be raised again to triple-digit levels.
However, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it was unlikely Trump would refuse to extend the truce with China.
“The US-China trade negotiations were wide-ranging, robust, and very satisfying,” Bessent said, as quoted by Reuters, Wednesday (July 30, 2025).
