Chinese Hackers Break Into
America’s Wiretapping System
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chinese hackers accessed America’s broadband internet network and stole information using the federal court system that was originally used for wiretapping.
Some of the American telecommunications companies that were victims of this hacking were Verizon Communications and Lumen Technologies, as quoted CNBC from Reuters.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the attack was launched by a hacker syndicate whose goal was to collect confidential information. American investigators called this attack “Salt Typhoon.”
These hackers are suspected of having had access to the network infrastructure used by operators for months to conduct wiretapping officially based on court orders. The Chinese government dismissed the accusations. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, they were unaware of any such attack. They also said that America had deliberately created a false narrative to corner China.
“In times like these where cybersecurity is a challenge faced by all countries around the world, such a wrong approach will only hinder the international community’s efforts to address such issues through dialogue and cooperation,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.Previously, the Chinese government has also often dismissed accusations by the US government and other countries regarding the use of hackers to break into other countries’ network systems. In early 2024, US law enforcement dismantled a Chinese hacker syndicate they called “Flax Typhoon,” and a few months earlier they also confronted the Chinese government over cyber espionage activities called “Volt Typhoon.”However, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, their cybersecurity agency found and published evidence showing that Volt Typhoon was an international ransomware syndicate.
