Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil asked Meta for an explanation after one of its subsidiaries, Facebook, deleted an article from local media which reported on a meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim and the leader of the Hamas group.

PM Anwar Ibrahim met with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar on Monday (13/5) this week. Furthermore, Anwar Ibrahim admitted to having a good political relationship with Hamas officials.

However, he emphasized that he was not involved in the military action launched by Hamas, quoted by Reuters, Thursday (16/5/2024).

Malaysia itself is a Muslim-majority country that vocally supports Palestine. In an official letter to Meta, the government asked for an explanation regarding the blocking of articles from two local media regarding the meeting between Anwar and top Hamas officials.

Apart from that, Meta also closed third party accounts that often shared the latest issues about Palestine.
