Fraudsters Steal Money Through
QRIS, Wiping Out Accounts, Here’s
How They Work
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia-The convenience of transacting via QRIS hasn’t escaped the attention of fraudsters. Recently, fraudsters have been using fake QR codes to lure their victims.
So, what’s the scam’s modus operandi?
The scam occurs when they scan the QR code, which will wipe out their accounts. The fake QR code will imitate the merchant’s identity, the type of goods, and the actual transaction amount. So, the victim won’t realize they’re transacting with a fraudster.
BI Speaks Out
Some time ago, Bank Indonesia issued a warning regarding this matter. Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Filianingsih Hendarta stated that QRIS is built with national security standards and refers to global best practices.
“QRIS security is a shared responsibility. BI, ASPI (Indonesian Payment Systems Association), and industry players in the PJP (Appraisal Services Company) consistently conduct outreach and education regarding QRIS transaction security to merchants,” she explained.
According to her, the circulation of fake QRIS requires a collaborative effort. Merchants also have a responsibility to ensure that the QRIS image is under their control.
Furthermore, merchants must monitor the QRIS purchase transaction process. This is done for both image scanning and EDC machines.
Secondly, merchants must also check the status of each payment, for example, ensuring they have received a notification after the transaction.
However, it’s not just merchants who are responsible. Buyers have the same responsibility to address this issue.
Filianingsih said buyers must ensure that the QRIS they scan matches the merchant’s identity.
“The name is correct; don’t use the name of a foundation, for example, but a spare parts store. That’s not appropriate,” she explained.
“At BI and ASPI, we always monitor the QRIS Payment Processing Unit (PJP) and consumer protection. So it’s our shared responsibility,” she concluded.
