GOTO Boss Says AI Development is a Strategic & Efficient Advantage
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –President Director of PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO), Patrick Walujo revealed that the company’s steps in developing artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to provide strategic advantages and can support the company’s cost management.
“Ultimately, we see the development of our own AI capabilities as a strategic advantage, reducing costs, improving user experience, and fostering local technology talent in the long term,” said Patrick, in the Earnings Call, Wednesday last week (12/3).
On November 14 last year, GoTo launched Sahabat AI, an open-source Large Language Model (LLM) developed primarily in Bahasa Indonesia – as well as other regional languages - to meet local needs.
Sahabat AI was created through a partnership with PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Tbk (ISAT), NVIDIA, AI Singapore and a number of other Indonesian institutions, including Kompas Gramedia and the University of Indonesia (UI).
In addition to supporting cost management, this development is also a manifestation of the company’s commitment to encouraging Indonesian digital talents.
According to Patrick, Sahabat AI has shown excellent results in various benchmark tests of specific tasks in Bahasa Indonesia, demonstrating a high level of accuracy in reading and interpreting local text compared to global AI models.
Therefore, the company is exploring the use of Sahabat AI in various applications, such as Chatbot and optical character recognition (OCR) technology for merchant menus.
This development will improve customer experience and simplify the merchant onboarding process.
“Ultimately, by developing the company’s AI capabilities, GoTo aims to gain strategic advantages, reduce costs, improve user experience, and develop local technology talent for the long term,” he said.
Last year, on a proforma basis, the company posted a positive adjusted group EBITDA of IDR 386 billion for the 2024 financial year, reversing the condition from the previous year which was still negative IDR 2.25 trillion.
The company recorded a proforma Group gross transaction value (GTV) in 2024 reaching IDR 519.78 trillion, an increase of 29% from the previous year’s GTV of IDR 402.12 trillion.
