Indodax Attacked By North Korean Hackers, Big Boss Speaks Out
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indodax CEO Oscar Darmawan explained the reason why the service has been inaccessible since September 11, 2024. He said there were indications of illegal access and security incidents on the Indodax server.
As a result, the cryptocurrency exchange service rushed to carry out maintenance.
“This step was taken as a precaution to protect the Indodax system and member funds remain safe and secure.
In addition to this maintenance, we found a security gap exploit used by the attacker and carried out remediation to close the gap,” Oscar said in his official statement, quoted Saturday (14/9/2024).
Regarding the perpetrators of the attack, Oscar said that an analysis from one of the world’s leading crypto security agencies found a connection with the DPRK from North Korea.
“We realize that this is a serious global threat, therefore we have coordinated with the Cyber Headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police to handle this incident quickly and effectively,” he explained.
“Apart from Indodax, the DPRK-affiliated hacker group has attacked many other global crypto exchanges before. They have also targeted many crypto exchanges with large liquidity and global standards,” he added.
Oscar said that his party together with world-class cybersecurity consultants are conducting a comprehensive review of Indodax’s infrastructure. This is to ensure that there are no more exploits/backdoors in the system.
“After the maintenance is opened, the Indodax system will return to normal operations. Member asset balances, both in rupiah and crypto assets, will remain exactly the same as before the maintenance. Members will be able to return to trading, depositing or withdrawing crypto assets as usual,” he explained.
Indodax also apologized to customers for the disruption experienced.
“Indodax apologizes profusely for this incident. We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of members during the maintenance period. We are committed to resolving this issue as quickly as possible and ensuring that our system is safe and stable again,” he said.
