Internet Paralyzed By Brothers,
Their Fate Is Tragic
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Two brothers from Sudan have just been charged in a United States (US) court. Both are suspected of running the Anonymous Sudan hacker group and are responsible for the paralysis of a number of services.
The suspects are named Ahmed Salah Yousif Omer (22) and Alaa Salah Yusuuf Omer (27). There were at least more than 35 thousand DDoS attacks orchestrated by the two of them, quoted from PC Mag, Thursday (10/17/2024).
The attack disrupted access to a number of major services, including Microsoft, PayPal and Riot Games.
Ahmed and Alaa are also suspected of creating attack tools called Godzilla Botnet and Skynet Botnet. The tools were sold to other hackers and around 100 customers have used them.
The attacks created are said to be quite strong. Even capable of paralyzing sites for hours.
Usually Anonymous Sudan will file a lawsuit through an account on Telegram. One of them was an attack targeting Open AI in November 2023.
“Warning of ongoing DDoS attacks unless OpenAI changes its chatbot activity and fires its chief research officer,” the FBI wrote in its statement.
The FBI, through undercover agents, tried to rent access to the DDoS tool to conduct an investigation. As a result, they were able to uncover the server used to launch the attack.
The FBI also said Paypal managed to identify the account used by the perpetrators.
For his crimes, Ahmed is likely to be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. The charges against him include three counts of damaging a protected computer and one count of conspiracy to damage a protected computer.
Meanwhile, Alaa may be sentenced to up to five years in prison. His brother received one count of conspiracy to damage a protected computer.
