Kominfo Opens Up About Why Hackers Successfully Attacked Data Centers

The Indonesia Ministry of Communication and Information recently shared some significant insights gathered from a high-level meeting focused on improving safety measures in the wake of the Temporary National Data Center (PDN 2) data breach. Specifically, they focused on strengthening password protection measures to prevent easy hacking.

The Director-General of Aptika from the Ministry, Hokky Situngkir, delineated on the overlooked matter of password selection and the ease with which they could be cracked. Speaking at the popular interaction platform, ‘Ngopi Bareng Ministry of Communication and Information,’ Hokky criticizes past lax security standards.

“To be candid, one principal lesson we’ve gathered is the importance of rigorous security measures. Just yesterday, we discovered the imposed passwords were alarmingly easy to bypass,” Hokky bemoaned on Friday (9/8/2024).

The ministry is also looking into fortified data backup procedures, ensuring multiple layers of backup, ensuring the optimal safety of information and minimizing data loss potential. Hokky reiterated the importance of adapting multifactor authentication, introducing a higher level of security to protect against potential cyber threats.

“The existing security operation center will not remain as is. It will be augmented and will integrate multifactor authentication – a vital measure for safeguarding data,” he clarified.

Debunking common misconceptions, Hokky stated that PDN does not simply centralize services. Rather, it elegantly brings together existing services, indicating that a typical operational center will not suffice given this concept.

“Contrary to popular belief, PDN does not aim to create a hub for services. It is a sophisticated platform that merges existing services. Therefore, the security operation center essentially requires an innovative approach,” he asserted profoundly.

The Ministry indicated they would continue to analyze and learn from these incidents, promising continuous evaluation and untiring efforts for improvement. “This is not an endpoint. As long as we keep facing challenges, we’ll keep refining our strategies and learning lessons,” Hokky affirmed.
