Netflix Boycotted by the Masses,
This is the Reason
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Netflix was boycotted because of the political choices of founder Reed Hastings. He is known to support the United States (US) presidential candidate Kamala Harris, including making a large donation to the campaign.
A Bloomberg report said there were many Netflix subscription cancellations in the US. Citing market intelligence firm Antenna, the number of cancellations almost tripled after Hastings, who is also Netflix chairman, gave his support to Harris, quoted from Qz, Tuesday (1/10/2024).
In July, churn increased by 2.8% compared to the previous month which was only 1.8%. While in August it became 2.0%.
During the period 25-29 July, the spike in churn increased per day by an average of 2.7 times from the previous two weeks. With the highest level on July 26.
Only after July 29 did the daily cancellation rate return to normal levels. Until now, the level has remained stable.
For information, the churn rate is defined as the percentage of customers who cancel a service during a certain period.
Hastings’ support was expressed in a post on his X account on July 22. The following day, he announced to The Information that he had donated US$7 million to a super PAC supporting Harris’ campaign.
The boycott action was voiced by supporters of Donald Trump, another US presidential candidate, after Hastings’ announcement of support for Harris. The hashtag #CancelNetflix was uploaded by supporters on social media, including some who shared images of themselves canceling their subscriptions on their accounts.
Meanwhile, Hastings also called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the nomination fight in the US presidential election. He did this after his poor performance against Donald Trump during the debate.
“Biden must step down to allow the leader of the Democratic Party to defeat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” he explained.
