New Fraud Mode: Fake Wifi at Airports
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Fake wifi networks were found on domestic flights and airports in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia. The police managed to uncover the crime and arrested a 42-year-old man.
The case began after airline employees reported the presence of a wifi network during the flight. Finally, the Australian Federal Police conducted an investigation since April 2024.
They named the 42-year-old man as the defendant. The police have also found evidence after searching his house, starting from portable wireless access devices, laptops, and cellphones.
The defendant is said to have carried out an attack called an evil twin. He will create a legitimate wifi network by creating a fake wireless access point with an SSID.
The victims will not suspect that they have accessed fake wifi. Those who connect to the network will enter a fake login that has been prepared.
Next, they will be asked to enter their personal data. The information requested includes financial data to personal identity.
Western Command Cybercrime Detective Inspector Andrea Coleman shared steps to protect yourself from fake wifi crimes. Namely by installing a reputable VPN.
VPN will make internet activities safer with encryption protection. In addition, user data will be secured when using the internet. Coleman also reminded not to be fooled by requests to enter personal data. Because legitimate wifi will not require any detailed
information to be able to access it.
