New Mode of Video Call Fraud from Acquaintances, Recognize the Characteristics of Deepfake

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The mode of fraud using deepfake technology is increasingly worrying, especially because of its ability to imitate a person’s voice, face, and even body movements convincingly.

Not only targeting individuals, this technology is also starting to be used to deceive the banking system.

Alfons Tanujaya, a cybersecurity expert from Vaksincom, shared important tips so that the public and financial institutions do not become victims.

According to Alfons, deepfake technology is indeed difficult to detect with the naked eye and often deceives its victims.

He highlighted the potential for serious risks if this technology is used to break into the banking system.

For deepfakes targeting the banking system, there must be an increase in the bank’s verification system.

“Don’t rely too much on video calls that are vulnerable to manipulation by deepfakes,” Alfons told CNBC Indonesia via text message, Tuesday (4/29/2025).

He then gave an example by implementing additional verification such as advanced biometric analysis, liveness detection in biometric verification, and the implementation of multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Not only banks, the public also needs to be more vigilant in interacting with parties claiming to be representatives of financial institutions.

Alfons appealed to the public not to immediately trust parties claiming to be from banks and contacting by phone or message.

“If in doubt, immediately contact the bank’s official customer service number,” he said.

He said that the public should never enter personal data or OTP on sites or links that are not secure.

Even if the link comes from an official bank number, remain vigilant. “Because in some cases, the bank’s SMS sender number can be faked by fraudsters,” explained Alfons.
