Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes

a Victim of Trump’s Tariffs

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia For those of you who are waiting for the release of the Nintendo Switch, it seems that you need to be patient again, because the release of the new console has been postponed.

Nintendo said that pre-orders for the highly anticipated Switch 2 game console will be postponed following the announcement of the President of the United States (US), Donald Trump regarding the new tariff policy.

“Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the US will not begin on April 9, 2025 to assess the potential impact of tariffs and developments in market conditions. However, Nintendo will update the schedule at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged,” said Nintendo, quoted from CNBC International, Saturday (5/4/2025).

This delay marks one of the most significant direct responses from a major company regarding concerns about Trump’s tariff policy and its impact on business and consumer spending.

Most electronics companies that manufacture in Asia, are the location of the sharpest tariff increases. Nintendo’s Switch 1 console is made in China and Vietnam.

Nintendo also did not say whether it would raise the price of the console, which was announced earlier this week as a $450 preorder price in the US.

IPC, a trade group focused on electronics manufacturers, estimates that the price of the game console could increase by up to 50% due to the tariffs announced this week.

Nintendo previously released the new console on the same day that Trump announced the new tariffs. The Switch 2 was released on April 2. Just hours after the Switch was released, Trump announced the new tariffs.

The Switch 2 itself is a bigger and faster version of the Switch 1. The Switch 1 has sold quite well, selling more than 150 million units since its launch in 2017.

Nintendo has raised the price from the Switch 1’s retail price by $300. The Switch 2 is powered by a custom Nvidia chip. Gamers will be able to use the Switch 2 as a handheld console and connect it to a television. The Switch 2 is expected to be available in June, along with a new Mario Kart game.

Analysts say the Switch 2 has better hardware, but is similar in form and function to its predecessor. The Switch 2 update offers a larger screen, mouse controls, and chat functionality available via a dedicated button.
