Social Media Restrictions Begin to be Discussed, Here is the Proposed Age Limit

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Ministry of Communication and Digital will summon Electronic System Organizers (PSE) to discuss restrictions on creating children’s accounts on social media, such as Meta Cs including Instagram and Facebook.

Expert Staff for Communication and Mass Media Komdigi Molly Prabawaty said that her party will hold further discussions by inviting digital platforms.

“Indeed, there will be further FGDs. Of course, we will also invite those from the digital platforms,” said Molly after holding a discussion with experts at the Komdigi Office, Jakarta, Thursday (6/2/2025).

They will also hear input from related parties such as educators, teachers, and children’s voices, which will be carried out in a gradual discussion.

On the same occasion, the Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid asked social media platforms to tighten the age verification system in the process of creating social media accounts.

She wants there to be an appropriate formulation as a digital indicator for children before they can access digital platforms. Including the obligation of PSE to upgrade its technology.

“Maybe this is the obligation of the platform to upgrade its technology, this is indeed the realm of Komdigi, meaning they have to upgrade too. If they don’t have a system that can ensure when the child enters their data, how can their children not pretend to be adults,” he explained.

“With AI, these platform friends should be able to detect better than before,” said Menkomdigi

Meutya said that the formulation of digital literacy indicators could also be included for education from the platform to also provide digital literacy or digital implications to its users.

“We also burden them [platforms] with that education, at the same time we listen to the Ministry of Education and Culture, please, academics. How is good digital literacy and what do we need to include in this PP related to digital literacy.” he concluded.

The Chairperson of the Indonesian Child Protection Agency (LPAI) Seto Mulyadi stated that age was one of the main topics of discussion in the Komdigi discussion.

“Indeed, one of the questions is at what age should children be subject to strict rules, starting at what age, some are based on the age of 13, but there are 15 years, 17, 18, and so on,” he said. Molly said that age is one of the technical matters that Komdigi has not yet decided. “Indeed, there are various ones, some are 13 years old, some say 12 years old, because they can think rationally above that age. But indeed, we have not found or have no certainty or decision, at what age should we set limits for children in the digital realm. Well, later as a continuation, we from the Komdigi Ministry will carry out further FGDs that are more technical in nature,” said Molly.
