Starlink “Colonizes” RI and Slashes Prices, Here’s Telkomsel and XL’s Reaction

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Starlink, which is a satellite-based technology owned by Elon Musk, is starting to enter Indonesia. Starlink has obtained two operating permits in Indonesia as a Vsat provider and ISP.

Starlink has different technology from other internet providers such as fiber optic or cellular. The technology used by Starlink can be used to reach remote areas of Indonesia.

Shortly after entering Indonesia, Starlink gave a big discount. In its announcement, the company is giving discounts of up to 40% on its hardware. The announcement is located at the top of the official Starlink Indonesia page. The price discount will be given until June 10, 2024.

This discount applies to devices on residential and roaming services. From the initial IDR 7.8 million to IDR 4.68 million. Meanwhile, the monthly service price remains IDR 750 thousand per month and regionally IDR 990 thousand per month.

The entry of Starlink into Indonesia and caused a stir was responded by 2 local internet providers, namely Telkomsel and XL. Telkomsel’s VP of Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility, Saki H. Bramono, said the government was asked to be fair to Starlink, which is entering the Indonesian market. Namely, by remaining obliged to comply with the establishment of a business entity in Indonesia, the application of taxes, PBNP payments, and the potential for interference.
