Starlink Emit High Radiation, Astronomers Reveal Its Impact
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Thousands of Starlink satellites will have a long-term impact if there is no prevention. ASTRON even said it could threaten astronomical activities.
“Satellites will be an existential threat to the type of astronomy that is done,” said ASTRON leader Jessica Dempsey, quoted from Qz, Monday (9/23/2024).
Starlink was launched in 2019. More than 7,000 satellites have been launched with 6,400 satellites still in orbit.
Elon Musk’s company targets to have 42 thousand satellites in the Starlink mega constellation. However, at the same time, many criticisms have come into the network.
It’s not just ASTRON that has revealed the Starlink problem. Many parties are concerned about the interference with observations that arise because of high-speed internet service satellite providers.
Radiation is a crucial problem that often appears on the surface. The company tried to paint the satellite black or use a sun shield, but the two options were eventually canceled.
Some time ago NASA was also concerned about the plan for tens of thousands of satellites to be released by Starlink. According to them, this will have an impact on space missions.
“NASA has concerns about the potential for a significant increase in frequency conjunction and the potential impact on NASA’s human spaceflight and science missions,” the space agency wrote to the Federal Communications Commission.
The number of satellites in space was also commented on by Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell. He said more experience was needed before it could be at that stage.
“I think we need a little more experience with a few thousand satellites in operation before we can scale up to tens of thousands,” he said.
