The Story of DPR Members Angry in the US Seeing Huawei’s New Laptop
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Members of the United States DPR were angry when they saw the new laptop made by Huawei being launched. Why?
Not long ago, Huawei introduced the Matebook X Pro laptop. It turns out that it is supported by AI technology on the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor.
This then became a question for the Republican congressman, Michael Gallagher. He questioned why Joe Biden’s government was still allowing Huawei to use technology from US companies.
“One of the biggest mysteries in Washington DC is why the Department of Commerce continues to allow US technology to be sent to Huawei,” said Gallagher, quoted by Reuters, Wednesday (15/5/2024).
As is known, the US government has restricted the business activities of companies in its country with Huawei since 2019. Since then, US companies have had to have special permits to be able to do business with Huawei.
Citing sources, Reuters stated that the Intel chip in the laptop was shipped using a previously existing license. It turns out that the license does not include products that are prohibited from being exported to China.
In a hearing at the US Congress some time ago, an export control official named Kevin Kurlan confirmed that the government’s restrictions had an impact on Huawei’s access to US technology. Even so, he reminded that the policy was not aimed at hindering Huawei’s business growth.
Unfortunately, this statement received a negative response from members of Congress. Especially when Huawei launched this new laptop.
Another congressman named Michael McCaul emphasized that approving this practice must be stopped.
“This approval must be stopped. Two years ago, I was promised that the license to Huawei would be stopped. To this day, the policy has not changed,” he explained.
National security
The congressman’s reaction clearly illustrates the pressure from politicians in the US to take steps to hinder Huawei’s business development.
United States (US) Minister of Foreign Affairs Antony Blinken briefly mentioned the launch of Huawei’s new laptop. The Chinese giant released a device with powerful AI capabilities and uses Intel chips originating from the US.
“I saw Huawei releasing a new laptop with AI capabilities and using an Intel chip,” he explained, quoted by Reuters, Monday (29/4/2024).
This fact, according to him, is the reason for the policy of blocking US technology exports to China implemented by the Joe Biden government. He emphasized that the policy focuses on technologies that threaten US security, not to restrain Chinese development.
“I think this shows our focus on sensitive technologies that pose a threat to our security. We are not focused on cutting off trade or containing or containing China,” said Blinken.
The US is known to be trying to block the use of its country’s technology for Chinese products. Chip deliveries to Huawei were stopped.
Following this rule, a number of sales from three companies, namely Nvidia, Advance Micro Devices and Intel, were cut in 2022. Finally, Intel and Qualcomm received licenses to send chips to Huawei.
The two companies’ licenses are still valid today, even though they were granted during the Donald Trump administration. Meanwhile AMD and MediaTek still have not received the same permission.
