Trump Tariffs Could Make iPhone
Prices Reach IDR 38 Million
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –The new tariffs imposed on many countries by United States (US) President Donald Trump are predicted to increase the prices of several goods. One of them is the iPhone made in China.
Although Apple is from the US, the company produces several devices in China. Including most of the iPhone line.
However, the price is likely to increase because the implementation of Trump’s tariffs also affects China. The country is subject to a total tariff of 54% from the US.
Based on calculations by Rosenblatt Securities analysts, the selling price of the iPhone could increase by 43%. For example, the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 1 terabyte of storage is sold for US$1,599 (IDR 26.4 million) and increases to US$2,300 (IDR 38 million).
The increase will also occur in the cheap iPhone that was just released last February, the iPhone 16E. When launched it was sold for US$599 (Rp 9.9 million) it could increase by more than Rp 10 million to US$856 (Rp 14.1 million) or much more expensive than the iPhone 16 which was priced at US$799 (Rp 13.2 million) when it debuted last year.
Reuters wrote that the prices of other Apple devices may also increase. However, Apple did not immediately respond to comments regarding this.
The plan to move some production to Vietnam and India is also not the best solution for this price increase. Because both countries are also affected by Trump’s latest tariff policy.
Vietnam is subject to tariffs of up to 46%, while India is charged 26%
This increase follows iPhone sales which have indeed worsened in recent times. One of the reasons is because the AI feature in the cellphone, Apple Intelligence, failed to impress the public.
A number of analysts say the feature is quite innovative. But it doesn’t make enough reason to buy a newer model.
