Unemployed for 15 Years, Suddenly Transferred Rp 143.1 Trillion
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Eight Bitcoin wallets that had been dormant for 14 years suddenly became active again. All wallets from 2011 sent 80,000 BTC coins, or approximately US$8.6 billion or Rp 143.1 trillion.
At that time, Bitcoin was still worth less than US$4 per coin, or the Satoshi era. The transferable amount was also only around 3,700 BTC.
However, tens of thousands of stored Bitcoin were suddenly sent. The transfers were made in multiple batches of 10,000 BTC each.
Speculation has arisen about the movement of this coin, which is considered the largest in history, ranging from changes in ownership, upgrades to new wallets, or security breaches.
However, Coinbase Director Conor Grogan has a different opinion. He doesn’t see any hacking, but rather a test of the wallet keys, which were apparently still unlockable.
“It’s unlikely that US$8 billion in BTC was hacked or that the private keys were compromised,” he said.
If the hacking speculation is true, he said the transfer of 80,000 coins could be the largest theft ever recorded.
“If true [again, I’m speculating] this would be the largest theft in human history,” Grogan said.
Meanwhile, Tech Spot reported there was no evidence the 80,000 Bitcoins had been sold or transferred.
Arkham Intelligence also spoke out about the transfer. The report mentioned a possible upgrade from an old format to a new, more secure address.
