Against ARM, Intel And AMD Agree To Create A Harmonized x86 Platform
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Intel and AMD, two rivals in the global chip market, decided to work together to form an x86 ecosystem advisory group, aka the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, Tuesday (10/15/2024) local time.
This group was created to improve the interoperability of the x86 ecosystem, in order to prevent the loss of x86 processor market share, which could be caused by ARM-made processors in the future. This interoperability is made possible by developer innovation through a more unified set of x86 architecture instructions and interfaces, so that operating systems, frameworks, and applications across Intel and AMD systems are more integrated. To achieve this, this group will seek technical advice from the x86 hardware and software community, regarding important functions and features in the architecture. In addition to interoperability, this collaboration is intended to increase customer choice while accelerating their ability to experience the benefits of new processor features, and simplifying x86 architecture guidelines.
For information, the x86 processor is a processor architecture used in computers and server hardware. Its components such as graphics cards, memory, and CPUs are independent of each other, and each is controlled by a different controller chip.Meanwhile, the ARM processor architecture does not have a separate CPU. This processing unit is on the same physical substrate as the controller of other device components, so the circuit is integrated.Intel and AMD sell processors, while ARM sells processor design patent licenses to semiconductor manufacturers such as Qualcomm and Nvidia.ARM then became increasingly popular because of its power efficiency, lower manufacturing costs, and other factors.

“We are on the cusp of one of the most significant changes in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades, with new levels of customization, compatibility, and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs,” said Pat Gelsinger as Intel CEO.
“We are proud to stand with AMD and the founding members of this advisory group, as we ignite the future of computing, and we greatly appreciate the support of so many industry leaders,” he added.
Lisa Su as AMD CEO explained that the creation of this advisory group will ensure that the x86 processor architecture will continue to evolve as the computing platform of choice, both for developers and consumers.
“We are excited to bring the industry together, to provide direction on future (x86) architecture improvements, and to extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come,” said Su.
