Android Phone Users Get 3
New Security Features From Apple
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Android phone users now get a new anti-theft security feature, a la Apple iPhone. Google has finally launched an anti-theft feature or called “Theft protection” for users of devices with the Android 10 operating system and above.
This feature was actually announced by Google through the annual Google I/O 2024 event last May, but was only released to users in early October via Play Service. This feature is similar to anti-theft protection on the iPhone.Users who have received the Theft protection feature can find the feature through the Settings menu > Google > All Service, then scroll the display until you find the “Personal & device safety” menu. From here, users who have received it will find the anti-theft menu.In that menu, users will also get a brief explanation of several anti-theft features. For example, the “Theft Detection Lock” feature which will automatically lock the screen when the device is detected as being stolen by someone else. Then the “Remote Lock” feature which will lock the cellphone screen remotely, when lost or stolen, using the user’s cellphone number. Please note, this Theft Protection feature is different from the Find My Device feature that helps users track and manage lost devices remotely.Theft Protection is a more proactive behavior-based feature designed to detect theft attempts and automatically lock the device in suspicious scenarios.
So how does it work?
Automatic protection
- In general, Google divides the anti-theft feature mechanism into two categories, namely automatic or manual from a distance (remote). For the automatic protection category, there are the Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock features.
- Reported by 9to5google, the Theft Detection Lock feature will work by utilizing device sensors, WiFi, and connections from the device, if the device is suddenly stolen and the phone is unlocked.
- Now, when this practice is detected, this feature will automatically lock the screen, to prevent others from accessing personal data or other important data on the phone.
- Meanwhile, the Offline Device Lock feature will be active if someone steals the user’s phone and then turns off the internet connection to prevent location tracking. However, Google also provides some notes so that this feature can be activated automatically, the details are as follows:
- You must actively use the device when the screen is unlocked
- The phone screen can be locked up to twice a day
Remote lock
- In this category, users can lock the device remotely; via the Remote Lock feature.
- If you want to use this feature, users must visit the android.com/lock page to call their stolen phone. Then the user needs to provide the phone number on the lost/stolen phone, and complete the security procedure. This mechanism can be done from a phone that is considered trusted.
- This series of features was initially tested by Google for Android users including Pixel and Samsung Galaxy in Brazil in June 2024.This series of features was initially tested by Google for Android users including Pixel and Samsung Galaxy in Brazil in June 2024.
