Beware Of New Tricks From Fraudsters, Calling Victims Using AI Voice
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology that is increasingly popular is also used for criminal acts. Fraudsters in cyberspace (scammers) use generative AI to carry out their actions.
Most recently, scammers used generative AI and committed fraud through the Gmail email service.
According to a Microsoft employee, Sam Mitrovic, scammers used a new trick to target Gmail users.
Through a post on his personal blog, Mitrovic explained that scammers used fake email titles that could trick users, such as “Confirmation of Gmail account recovery”.
Although the email was ignored, Mitrovic admitted to receiving a call about 40 minutes after the email was received. The caller claimed to be from Google and the caller ID showed Google Sydney.
Because Mitrovic was quite familiar with this fraudulent practice, he immediately ignored the call. However, a week later, he received another fake email with the same title and via an email address that seemed more official.
As before, this Microsoft employee also received a call from someone claiming to be an official Google Support representative.
When the call was answered, the scammer claimed that Mitrovic’s Gmail account had been hacked and his data was at risk. During the call, Mitrovic also noticed that the caller’s voice sounded very similar to the voice of an AI.
In general, the style of speech behind the caller also sounded professional and polite, but he realized that the voice and intonation were too perfect, so he knew that the caller was an AI.
Moreover, the phone number was also exactly the same as the Google Australia phone number, even though Mitrovic was in the United States. However, he knew that the practice of spoofing numbers was also quite easy to do.
As soon as he realized this, Mitrovic immediately hung up the phone to prevent possible hacking. Because, the longer the call lasted, he might be directed to click on a malicious link attached to the email.
He then shared his experience while warning all Gmail users to be careful when receiving emails or calls similar to what he experienced.
For Gmail users, they can maintain account security by doing the following, compiled by KompasTekno from Gizchina, Tuesday (10/15/2024):
Use the two-factor authentication (2FA) feature to provide extra protection for your account
Be careful of emails requesting account recovery or requesting sensitive information. Always check the legality of the request.
Report suspicious activity with the tools provided by Google in Gmail
