Chinese cellphones are starting to abandon Android, here’s the schedule
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Huawei plans to completely break away from Android. This step will begin with the Beta launch of HarmonyOS Next next June.
Gizmochina reports HarmonyOS Next will abandon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) codebase. This step will make Huawei rely solely on systems developed by itself.
According to the report, Huawei has convinced thousands of companies and institutions to develop native applications for its operating system. In fact, according to the Chinese technology giant, more than 4,000 original applications were developed for HarmonyOS Next, quoted Monday (20/5/2024).
Gizchina wrote that the applications developed for HarmonyOS Next cover many things. Starting from navigation, news, finance to games.
Huawei plans to attract more applications into its ecosystem. At least the company plans a target of 5,000 native Huawei OS applications by 2024 and 500 thousand applications for the long term target.
The Beta launch coincides with Huawei’s developer conference schedule. Meanwhile, a wider launch for HarmonyOS Next will take place next September.
It’s not yet clear what devices will be able to access the initial update. However, tipster Digital Chat Station has leaked information that is claimed to be from internal plans.
According to the leak, HarmonyOS Next is available for candy bar flagships, foldable phones, mid-range phones, tablets and smartwatches.
Gizmochina wrote that the candy bar probably refers to the Mate 70 series. Based on a number of reports, this new line of cellphones will be launched in early September.
