Donald Trump Claims Tim Cook Called Him, Complains Apple Was Fined
Billions Of US Dollars In Europe
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Former US President Donald Trump recently revealed that he received a call from Apple CEO Tim Cook.
In the call, Trump claimed that Apple boss Tim Cook told him about Apple being fined in the European Union.
As quoted by Tech Times, Tuesday (10/22/2024), according to the call, Apple was fined USD 17 billion or equivalent to IDR 263.7 trillion in Europe due to various investigations against them.
Still based on information, Apple is now reportedly facing this fine. The company is said to be paying a large amount of the fine as a form of compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations.
This information from Donald Trump was revealed from Patrick Bet-David’s PBD podcast on YouTube which featured the Republican presidential candidate.
In the podcast, Trump talked about political issues and other current events. When asked about the economy, he revealed that he had recently received news from Apple CEO Tim Cook that the company was facing a fine of USD 15 billion in the European Union.
Meanwhile, 9to5Mac said the fine was imposed by Ireland regarding the tax case faced by Apple. The company was asked to pay at least USD 13 billion.
Apart from that, Apple is currently facing a fine in the European Union regarding anti-competition issues with their music streaming platform, Apple Music.
The European Union imposed a fine of USD 2 billion. So the total money that must be paid is USD 17-18 billion.
According to 9to5Mac, Tim Cook’s call with Donald Trump is one of Apple’s efforts to maintain its closeness to politicians and people who have power in politics.
Tim Cook Also Called Kamala Harris?
Previously, Tim Cook was also said to have called Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also a Democratic presidential candidate.
Trump revealed that he told Cook that he would not let the European Union take advantage of US companies if he was elected president again.
Apple is one of a number of US companies that are often affected by European Union regulations, especially since the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). DMA itself is a regulation that focuses on eliminating company behavior that is considered anti-competitive while providing EU citizens with fair access to technology.
Apple’s Fate in Europe, Must Comply with DMA Rules
Not long ago at the beginning of the year, DMA began to be enforced in the European Union. As a result, the European government asked Apple to make a number of changes in their application store, the App Store, to its iOS operating system.
In response, the Cupertino-based technology company rolled out a number of changes in its ecosystem.
These include allowing third-party payment options to allowing users to download applications from third-party application stores. Previously, users could only download applications through the App Store.
