Europeans Don’t Care About
Being Spied On By Robots
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –The majority of Europeans welcome plans for police and military to use artificial intelligence to monitor residents. Europe, however, has stricter personal data protection rules than other regions.
Based on a survey of 3,000 Europeans by IE University Madrid, 75 percent fully support the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as facial recognition and biometric data.
“It is unclear whether they understand the impact of implementing AI,” said Ikhlaq Sidhu from IE University,
The European Union has implemented a data protection rule called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This regulation determines how private and public organizations process and store data.
The penalties for violating the GDPR are very severe, namely 4 percent of a company’s annual gross revenue or US$ 21.7 million, one of the largest.
Although they support the use of AI for monitoring, Europeans tend to reject the use of AI in democratic processes such as manipulation (67 percent).
AI can be used to spread fake news through deepfakes technology, which are images, voices, and videos that resemble real people who are manipulated to do or say fake news.
Generative AI platforms such as OpenAI’s Dall-E or Midjourney’s Stability AI can create fake images just by using text commands.
“AI and deepfakes are the latest examples of the trend of fake news and the increasing difficulty of verification. A trend that has been growing since the beginning of the internet, social media, and AI algorithms,” Sidhu said.
