Microsoft Releases AI PC, This
Is the Difference from a Regular
Windows Laptop
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Microsoft has just announced their newest product, labeled AI PC, a personal computer (PC) with the Windows operating system equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI support is expected to boost the competitiveness of Windows laptop and computer products against Macs made by Apple.
So, what is the difference between an AI PC and a regular laptop or computer?
According to Reuters, computer and laptop products labeled AI PC are capable of processing data faster and carrying out more tasks at the same time compared to previous products.
AI PCs can also carry out AI tasks internally without having to send data to the cloud, including chatbots. This means that programs like ChatGPT or Gemini can later be used without having to be connected to the internet. Currently, ChatGPT can only run in the cloud .
Some of the most premium products are even capable of training their own AI. Previous AI training could only be done on servers because it required enormous computing power.
Laptop and Windows computer manufacturers hope that this feature will boost demand for personal computers amid the popularity of AI. AI is now used for everything from writing emails to planning vacations.
Research company Canalys estimates that global AI PC shipments will exceed 100 million by 2025, accounting for 40 percent of the PC market.
The AI PC’s ability to process AI activities internally is supported by a special processor called a neural processing unit (NPU).
The NPU, CPU, and GPU are designed to work together to perform complex tasks, increase computer speed, and increase computer power to support applications such as AI smart assistants.
The ability to run AI internally also supports a feature called Recall. Recall on the latest Windows computers can be used to search for and retrieve information from all activities carried out by the user.
Recall tracks every user action on the laptop from video calls to internet browsing, then creates a very detailed history. Users can then search for specific activities in this history.
According to Reuters, the Recall feature has been widely highlighted on social media because it is accused of destroying privacy. The reason is, there are suspicions that the data harvested from Recall is also stored by Microsoft and not only stored on the user’s computer.
On the other hand, the ability to run AI programs without having to send data outside the computer is said to increase user privacy. Research firm Forrester added the ability to train AI internally reducing customer risk of copyright or personal data rules, making it more attractive to corporate users.
Apart from the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro tablet that Microsoft just launched, computer brands such as Dell, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus and Acer will also release AI PC devices with the Copilot Plus label in the near future.
The Surface Laptop with Copilot Plus is priced at US$ 999 or around IDR 16 million. The Lenovo ThinkPad t14s Gen 6 is expected to start at US$ 1,699 (Rp. 27.2 million).
