Phone Calls from Fraudsters Are Easy to Recognize, These Are the Characteristics of Vishing
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia –Cybercriminals use various methods to trap victims, one of which is using the vishing fraud method.
Vishing is a voice phishing that aims to lure victims into handing over access or information that can be used to hijack cellphones or mobile applications.
Phishing victims are lured into clicking on certain links or downloading files that implant malware on cellphones.
For this reason, you must be vigilant if you receive a call from a stranger. At least first recognize the characteristics of vishing that are usually carried out by criminals.
Here are the signs of a phone call from a fraudster that you should be aware of:
1. Claiming to be from the government or a large company
Beware of calls from people claiming to represent government agencies or large companies. Fraudsters act as people who have the authority to intimidate victims. Be careful of callers who claim to be from institutions such as the FBI, or large companies such as Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, or Netflix.
2. Offering deals or prizes
Don’t believe anyone who says you have been selected to receive a prize. If you haven’t entered a lottery or won a raffle, it’s most likely a scam.
3. Don’t know your name
The caller uses a generic greeting without giving the person’s name. Officials calling to ask for information or money should know the person’s name.
4. The scammer claims there’s an unpaid debt
The scammers use the classic intimidation tactic of an unpaid debt. They’ll then threaten fines or jail time.
When in doubt, hang up and call the company or agency directly to see if the threat is credible.
5. Asking for sensitive information
The scammers usually ask for personal data such as ID numbers or credit card numbers. Never give them what they ask for under any circumstances.
6. Device infected with malware
The victim will be told that the device they’re using has been infected with malware or a virus. If you’re told this during the call, never install remote access software such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
7. Asking for personal information you should already know
The insurance company calling should already have the claim number. The school should also know the name of the child of the parent they are calling.
Don’t be fooled by someone asking you to “verify” your information.
8. There is a delay when answering the phone
Scammers use automated dialing technology that only connects victims to them when you answer.
